After over 20 sessions at Northwoods Pilates, Rox is finding that Joe’s words really resonate with her: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference. In 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you’ll be on your way to having a whole new body.” Check out how Rox is seeing the difference in today’s blog!
Reflections, today, on the past three months and my journey from that first session when I felt nervous and awkward and way big in my stretchy pants. (I really do just put it right out there for you guys. ;-)) I contrast my feelings, that day, with my outlook today. Now, with over twenty sessions behind me, my feelings toward a regular, structured exercise program and, really, exercise in general, have changed entirely.
I now look forward to each Pilates session. Yes, it would take some kind of emergency for me to miss “Pilates day,” two times a week. I leave each session feeling strong and rejuvenated and looking forward to the next session. I would be remiss if I didn’t add that actually going to Northwoods for my sessions, with Cassie, is also a huge motivator as opposed to, for example, saying I will do Pilates at home with the aid of an exercise video. The sessions are on my calendar and I know Cassie is there to welcome me, encourage me, and coach me on correct form.
I’ve mentioned a multi-faceted approach in past blogs, but I want to point out, again, that I’m accompanying Pilates with regular walking (treadmill and outdoors) and Weight Watchers. I’m down 35 lbs in twelve weeks! I emphasize that my weight loss success is not due to Pilates alone, but a combination of all of the factors I’ve noted. Anyone who knows me well knows that, once I gain momentum, I have a tendency to be somewhat competitive and a bit of a perfectionist. I know that is why one positive life change – Pilates – led to all of the other changes…..healthy eating, muscle strengthening and cardio.
As for my Pilates sessions, that two hour a week mental and physical high is amazing enough but I’m aware that what feeds into my Pilates passion are also the benefits I am feeling the other 166 hours of the week. The patience and persistence of returning session after session, week after week is paying off. I’m not only feeling the benefits but I’m also beginning to see the benefits in so many different ways.
I will sometimes catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or my reflection in a storefront when I’m strolling through the mall and I notice I’m standing taller. I’m holding my head up. I’m rocking a tall spine and, as a result, benefiting from deeper breaths that are more productive for a girl who has things to do and ground to cover.
Of course, in addition to the positive changes I’m seeing in my daily life as I walk, play and work, I’m also seeing a difference within each Pilates session. At the risk of sounding like an exercise nerd, I love it when I’m doing the “ab series” in a session or the “leg series” and I can see my body responding to what my mind wants it to do by being able to do more reps of a movement and, more importantly, to be able to have the correct form during a movement. It’s been an exciting transformation to not only feel those physical changes but also to see them in each session!
I end my blog with a quote from Maya Angelou:
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
For so many years, walking was my “go to” exercise and, sadly, for weeks and months at a time throughout my life, I didn’t make time for any type of movement. Since I’ve learned, firsthand, about the benefits I can feel and see from combining cardio with working on strength training, flexibility, balance and breathing, via Pilates, I now know better.
As a result, I’m doing better. Pilates on, my friends!!
