How often should I do Pilates?
I get this question quite often and my answer is always the same: it doesn’t matter as long as you’re consistent. After giving that answer I usually see my clients deflate a little. They were hoping for a concrete number; an exercise prescription. I get it. We’re all running around trying to do 10,000 things and it feels easier if someone else fills in the blanks. While I won’t know your magic number, here’s a list of things to consider when deciding how many Pilates sessions to add to your week.
Your goals: What do you hope to achieve with Pilates? A stronger core? More flexibility? Back pain relief? Toned muscles? Functional fitness? 50 minutes that are dedicated to your health?
Your lifestyle: Are you more active or sedentary? Is Pilates your only movement in the week or are you using it as cross-training?
Your health: Have you been battling joint pain? Do you suffer from a chronic health condition? Are you healthy and want to stay that way? Does your doctor recommend breathing and mindful exercise for stress relief?
There are dozens more considerations that may affect your perfect number, but if all else fails I recommend starting with two sessions a week and we can ratchet up or down from there. No matter what your number is, Pilates is a practice, and the key to success is consistency!
